Bankers Bank. AI Just Helps Them.

It is here to make a lender better, not to replace one.

By Brad Hawley, Principal  |  5 min read

Artificial intelligence has absorbed a great many job tasks, and every banker, particularly every banker under thirty, is right to be asking where a person still fits in.

I have spent 27 years in revenue-generating roles. Some of them fit my profile and some plainly did not. Some years I beat the number comfortably. Others were what we will politely call pipeline rebuilding years. Through all of it I went from someone who took a job out of college to someone who understood the craft, and none of that was taught to me by a piece of software.

From Delphi to AI: 27 Years of Tools

My use of technology, and every employer’s use of it, expanded every year from the moment I walked into Eli Lilly and was handed my first laptop and a system called Delphi, into which I entered as little as I could get away with. Banking has run the same arc: paper credit files to imaging, branch ledgers to core platforms, and now models that will spread a borrower’s financials before you have finished your coffee.

Through all of it, one thing has not moved: the relationship is still the product.

Where AI Actually Fits in a Bank

AI genuinely makes parts of commercial banking faster and sharper. Unpack it, though, and the help arrives in two places, neither of which is the one that matters most:

Prospecting

Reading call reports and filings, scoring which businesses in a market look like they are outgrowing their bank, spotting which competitors are pulling back, and finding the right door faster.

Portfolio and Pipeline

Spreading financials, drafting the memo, flagging covenant slippage early, prioritizing renewals, and clearing the administrative work that eats a lender’s week.

The main event still happens between people. An owner deciding to move their operating account, a guarantor agreeing to sign personally, a borrower calling you first when something goes wrong in their business: none of that is a document.

AI can get you to the right business at the right moment. A banker still has to walk in.

What Today’s Producers Actually Think

A HubSpot survey of sellers broadly, not bankers specifically, shows an inconsistent and rather telling picture. The pattern will be familiar to anyone who has watched a lending team meet a new core system:

59%

are concerned about AI replacing their jobs

Mostly evidence that they have not yet seen what it does. People fear the tool they have not been shown.

78%

say AI can help them spend more time on critical aspects of their job

They can see the value. Set against the first number, they simply do not yet know how to get at it.

64%

say AI automates 1–5 hours of weekly manual tasks

A good number are already clawing back hours. More than a third are not touching it at all.

The Simple Truth

Plenty of producers are still resistant, and it would be naïve to pretend the tools do not have a place. The numbers say AI is already creating capacity for the people who picked it up. In a lending seat, capacity means hours back from the administrative half of the job, which is exactly the half that has been crowding out the calling.

What has not changed, and will not: money is a commodity and the banker is the differentiator. Rates compete inside a few basis points. Every bank in your market has a treasury platform. What a business owner is actually choosing is a person they believe will pick up the phone when their receivables go sideways. No model has an answer for that.

AI is here to make bankers better, not to replace them. The work is understanding where it belongs in the order of things.

AI Will Not Replace the Wrong Hire Either

Technology makes a lending team more efficient. It does not make the wrong lender into the right one. Talnted finds the bankers who fit the seat, and shows you the list before we call any of them.

Key Takeaways

✓ AI is strong at finding the business and clearing the paperwork. The relationship still needs a banker.

✓ 59% of sellers fear replacement while 78% see the potential. That gap closes with exposure, not argument.

✓ AI already returns one to five hours a week. In a lending seat that is calling time.

✓ Money is a commodity. The banker is the differentiator, and always has been.

✓ AI makes good bankers better. It does not make a mis-hire produce.
